How to calculate your own cost per mile

For petrol or diesel:

The formula is: (100 ÷ MPG × fuel price in pence) ÷ 4.546

Example: 40 MPG car, petrol at 156.8p/litre → (100 ÷ 40 × 156.8) ÷ 4.546 = 8.6p per mile

Or simply use our calculator — enter your journey, car, and speed and we calculate it automatically for any route.

For electric cars:

The formula is: electricity price in pence ÷ miles per kWh

Example: 3.5 miles/kWh, home charging at 24p/kWh → 24 ÷ 3.5 = 6.9p per mile

The true cost per mile — beyond fuel

Fuel is the most variable cost but not the only one. The RAC estimates total car ownership costs per mile for a typical family car at around 40-60p per mile when you include:

Cost categoryTypical pence per mile
Fuel / energy8-14p
Depreciation10-20p
Insurance5-10p
Servicing & tyres3-6p
Road tax (VED)1-3p
Finance costs5-15p
Total32-68p per mile

Fuel typically represents only 15-30% of the total cost of running a car. Depreciation is usually the biggest single cost for most drivers.

HMRC mileage rate: For business mileage claims, HMRC allows 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles and 25p per mile after that. This is designed to cover all running costs including fuel, depreciation, and insurance.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to drive per mile in the UK in 2026?
For fuel costs only: petrol averages around 8.5-12p per mile, diesel 9-11p per mile, and electric (home charging) 2-7p per mile. Total running costs including depreciation, insurance and maintenance are typically 40-60p per mile for an average family car.
How do I calculate cost per mile for my car?
For petrol/diesel: divide the fuel price in pence per litre by your MPG, then multiply by 0.2199 (litres per mile conversion). Or use Fuel Smarter — enter your route and car and we calculate it automatically. For electric: divide the electricity price in pence per kWh by your miles per kWh.
What is the HMRC approved mileage rate for 2026?
The HMRC approved mileage allowance payment (AMAP) rate is 45p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles per tax year, then 25p per mile after that. For motorcycles it is 24p per mile. For electric cars, the same 45p rate applies — HMRC has not introduced a separate EV rate.
Is it cheaper to drive diesel or petrol per mile?
It depends on your MPG. Diesel is currently 32p per litre more expensive than petrol in the UK, so a diesel car needs to achieve significantly better MPG to cost less per mile. A diesel car achieving 50 MPG costs about the same per mile as a petrol car achieving 38 MPG. For lower-mileage urban driving, petrol is usually more cost-effective.
