Fuel Smarter is a free tool that helps drivers understand the true cost of any car journey — not just the price at the pump, but how speed, road type, vehicle choice, and driving style all affect what you actually spend.

The person behind it

"I built Fuel Smarter out of frustration — and a lot of time on the M4."

I found myself making regular trips up and down the M4 and becoming increasingly curious about how much my speed was actually costing me. I'd watch the fuel gauge and notice it dropping faster when I pushed on — but I had no real way of quantifying it. Was driving at 80mph instead of 70mph costing me an extra £2? £5? More?

So I started doing what any curious person does — I looked for a tool that could tell me. I couldn't find one. Every fuel calculator I tried just asked for distance and MPG and gave you a single number. None of them accounted for speed, road type, or the actual difference between a motorway cruise and stop-start urban driving.

So I built one.

Fuel Smarter started as a personal project to answer my own question. It's grown into something I hope is genuinely useful for any driver who's ever wondered what their journeys actually cost — and what small changes could save them money every time they get behind the wheel.

What Fuel Smarter does

Fuel Smarter is and will always be free to use. We don't require an account, we don't track you, and we don't sell your data. If we ever add advertising it will be clearly labelled and non-intrusive.

Coming soon

We're currently working on proper number plate lookup using the official DVLA database, and a Fuel Finder integration to show the cheapest petrol stations along your route. An "is it worth your time?" wage comparison feature is also in development — so you can see whether the time you save by driving faster is actually worth the extra fuel cost.
