French fuel prices are slightly cheaper than the UK for both petrol and diesel — particularly diesel, which is around 17p per litre cheaper than in the UK. Supermarket forecourts (Leclerc, Intermarché, Carrefour) are consistently the cheapest places to fill up in France, often 8-12 cents per litre cheaper than motorway service stations.
Autoroute fuel warning: Fuel at French autoroute service stations (Aires de service) is significantly more expensive than at supermarkets — often 15-20 cents per litre more. Plan to fill up at a supermarket before joining the motorway where possible.
French speed limits — what UK drivers need to know

French autoroute tolls
France has one of the most extensive toll road networks in Europe. Unlike the UK where motorways are free, driving on French autoroutes involves significant toll costs that can easily match or exceed your fuel bill on a long journey.
| Route | Approximate toll (car) |
|---|---|
| Calais to Paris (A26/A1) | ~€30 |
| Paris to Lyon (A6) | ~€35 |
| Paris to Nice (A6/A7/A8) | ~€80 |
| Paris to Bordeaux (A10) | ~€35 |
| Lyon to Marseille (A7) | ~€25 |
💡 Tips for saving money on French autoroutes:
Use a télépéage badge (Liber-t or Bip&Go) — available to UK drivers and often slightly cheaper than cash payments. They also let you use faster dedicated lanes.
The VINCI Autoroutes app and autoroutes.fr let you calculate toll costs before you travel so you can budget accurately.
Some routes have free alternatives — slower but toll-free. The N roads (routes nationales) run parallel to many autoroutes and are worth considering if time isn't critical.
What UK drivers need for driving in France
