Australian fuel prices follow a well-known weekly cycle in major cities โ prices typically rise sharply on Thursdays and Fridays before falling back through the following week. Filling up on a Tuesday or Wednesday generally gives you the lowest price of the cycle. Regional and remote areas often pay significantly more than city averages due to transport costs.
How much does a typical Australian journey cost?

Understanding L/100km โ Australia's fuel economy measure
Australia uses litres per 100 kilometres (L/100km) to measure fuel economy โ unlike the UK and US which use miles per gallon (MPG). A lower L/100km number means better fuel economy. A typical Australian family car uses around 9-11L/100km in combined driving, while fuel-efficient small cars can achieve 6-7L/100km and larger SUVs and utes may use 12-15L/100km.
Converting L/100km to MPG: Divide 282.5 by your L/100km figure. So 10L/100km โ 28 MPG, 8L/100km โ 35 MPG, 6L/100km โ 47 MPG.
Speed limits in Australia are 100 km/h on most state roads and 110 km/h on motorways in most states. Driving at 110 km/h uses noticeably more fuel than 100 km/h โ our calculator shows you exactly how much on your specific journey.
